I recently heard a story from an acquaintance whose dryer stopped working properly, and the cause turned out to be a completely clogged vent. Turns out they had never cleaned it at all in 5 years! This was a red flag for me, since I have two kids at home and run the dryer almost daily. I don't want to risk safety due to inattention. I'm wondering how often it's even worth cleaning and if there's any way to check the condition of the vent myself?
